End of List -------------------- Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman |

By MICHELLE DeARMOND Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Frustrated by the way American Indians are portrayed by Hollywood, an actor from "Dances With Wolves" has launched a company dedicated to creating productions from an Indian point of view.
Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, who played Chief Ten Bears in the Academy Award-winning Kevin Costner film, said Indian history has been distorted and glossed over in schools and entertainment. He hopes his company, Red Crow Creations, will be able to address those inaccuracies through film, television and education.
"The Indian point of view in America is so important today. We have agonized for several centuries now over why the Indian point of view is not mentioned," he said. "When the truth is told, there is a healing that comes and dispels the denial, and I think America needs to go through the healing about this."
The announcement Thursday came as Westerman neared completion of the first installation in the company's initial project: '"Exterminate Them!' America's War on Indian Nations." The installation, dubbed "The California Story," coincides with the state's 150th anniversary and tells the story of attempts in California to kill off the Indians during the Gold Rush, he said.
Westerman hopes to release "The California Story" by the end of the year, but doesn't know yet where it will appear. He would like to release it to film festivals and some theaters and is seeking television distribution partners.
The project has been funded almost entirely by California Indian tribes, whose political and financial power has grown dramatically as dozens of them have established casinos across the state over the past decade.
Valerie Red Horse, founder of Red Horse Native Productions and co-producer and co-director of the film "Naturally Native," praised Westerman for working to get beyond the stereotypical portrayals of Indians in Hollywood as "the beautiful princess or wise shaman."
"Most of the roles being given to us were very stereotypical," she said.
"I don't want to sound racist," she said of the people who produced those films, "but those people were not people that lived on a reservation and knew what they were writing about. Most of the time it was someone's bad concept of John Wayne Western stereotypes."
Red Horse predicted Westerman's company will fare well in Hollywood and said she doesn't see Red Crow Creations as competition for her own company, formed in 1996.
There are more than enough Indian stories to go around, she said, a thought echoed by Clyde Bellecourt, the national director and one of the founders of the American Indian Movement.
Many stories about Indians remain untold, including explanations of how they have governed themselves, what kind of medical care they have had and how alcoholism, drug abuse and high suicide rates have affected tribes, Bellecourt said.
"I think the history of native people has forever been hidden. Nothing or very little is taught in the public and parochial schools of America," said Bellecourt, who would like to work as a consultant for Westerman and has several story ideas for him.
"I think they should just portray the truth of how the West was really won with no lies and everything and just present the truth."
By taking control of their own image in history books and entertainment media, Indians will be able to assert greater control over their overall future, Red Horse said. Members of Congress who were raised with inaccurate images of Indians now are making laws that affect Indian sovereignty, she said, and are influenced by those stereotypes.
Westerman also is developing an animated project, "Storytellers," and a one-hour music concert documentary special. The company, which eventually wants to operate as a full-scale studio, plans to serve as a consultant to others in Hollywood and will use Indian trainees from Westerman's nonprofit Eyapaha Institute on its projects in an effort to get more Indians involved in the business.
